"I Have A Dream"

I have always had a deep love and passion for literature and political science. I remember when in my Sophomore year in High School these two passions collided. I was introduced to the powerful words of Martin Luther King Jr. in his "I Have A Dream" speech. I was so touched by his words that I carried a copy of his speech with me everywhere I went and would reread his speech over and over again. I wanted to understand more about what he was saying. So I started reading and researching the American Civil Rights Movement and what was happening in America at that time. I was astounded! My heart was heavy to know of the atrocities that had been committed simply because of race, sex, or religion. I have always been sensitive to this issue since I am biracial and have seen racism first hand in my own life. I was so moved by Martin Luther King Jr. that he has always been someone I admired. I remember in my youth the questions surrounding whether there should be a holiday held in his honor. I know it was great today to have a day off from school or work but to me it meant so much more. It was a time to stand and remember that we do live in a great nation where all of us have benefited from the work that was done during the American Civil Rights Movement. We owe much to the courage and strength of all those who paved the way for us today. I am so grateful that I am an American and that I have the rights that I enjoy!

I know you will teach Leam to love people regardless of their race, color or religion. We have come a long ways but there is still a long road ahead to combat the mentality of so many. All we can do, as you are already doing, is to teach our children to apreciate the differences in others. That is what makes a nation great.
I sure enjoy your blog and seeing how big Leam is getting.
Love you.

Every Martin Luther King Jr. Day I am reminded of what one person can do. He literally changed the world. He and Rosa Parks together. It's amazing what truth can do if you stand (or in Rosa's case sit) for it.

*very* cool post Moana! I took a class once on racism and I was shocked really at the things some people go through just because their skin is a different color. Having lived as a minority race in a culture before (when I lived in China) I understand what it is like. Very well said!!
