Moana And The Big Decision

After long contemplation and tons of soul searching I have come to a major decision. I have decided that I am ready to return back to college. I feel so vulnerable and scared admitting this to the whole world and yet, it is time. Bill has given me so much support and so has his family. Grammy Coleen will be taking care of Liam part time and Liam will also be spending half days two days a week at the Children's House here on campus.

To better understand what I would really like to be studying, I have been working closely with the Career Center here on campus as well. I opted to take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test and the Strong Interest Inventory Tests to better help me decide what my strengths and needs are. If you have no idea what your interests are or what you would like to be studying I strongly encourage taking these tests. If you remotely curious about what your strengths are or more in depth information about your personality then I strongly encourage taking these tests! I have had 3 sessions with a trained counselor that has deciphered the tests for me and shared with me valuable information about my personality. Things like I enjoy communicating and working in groups but I am not a huge risk taker. I am the kind of person that needs constant change, loves ideas, and loves structure in my working environment but needs to have creative license in how the job gets done. I am an extrovert but am introspective. Things like that,so some good insights into me. I also was given a list of the top 10 jobs for my personality type that I then compared to the findings of the Strong Interest Inventory test. I then have a narrowed down list of jobs that I am researching here. Then my counselor will help me with this information to narrow it down even more. It has been a fascinating process and I am learning so much already and we are only in June! I have just registered for Fall and am only going to take a light load this first semester back.

I would greatly appreciate any advice that other mothers out there could share with me. I am scared to death! How do I manage my housework, making healthy affordable meals that meet my Weight Watcher goals, how do I make sure I get the grades I need, I have time to nurture my marriage, sleep, spend quality time with Liam and make him not feel neglected, how do I basically manage all of the many tasks that I am going to be doing?? I am totally scared and yet I know that I need to have an education. Any support you could lend to me would be greatly appreciated!! I am excited and totally freaking out at the same time!! I keep asking myself, "What am I doing?" I am having serious doubt on how I am going to pull this off and yet I have met and am living around the most amazing women who do this every single day. I need your strength and advise mamma's!

It's a tall order isn't it, being a mom and balanced at that with everything else. It was really hard for me when I had to go back to work after Shelby was born. I probably don't have great advice but I just say take it a day at a time and remember that sometimes something may have to give. Good luck!!

Hey Moana! You are going to do so well in school, you are so smart & what an exciting change it is you are making! I have never went to school with kids but I went back to work for a few months. The only advice I can give is to rely upon the Lord. With him your load will be light. Focus on what is important, realize you don't have to be perfect. Just know that your dishes wont get done, laundry will pile up and Liam wont always get his teeth brushed haha, but it is OK. You are going to do great! Love ya, Michelle

Moana, I'm so proud of you big sister, I have been contemplating taking the plunge as well. I'm thinking independent study though. I'm so proud of you and look up to you so much, thank you for everything you are, I'm rooting for you Sis, you're amazing and you are going to kick some butt, and experience some "awesomeness" in school! Way to chase your dreams! Love ya and hope to see you soon! Love Laura Eb

That is so awesome and I'm so proud of you!!! One thing I noticed Moana, as far as going to school with kids is that if you put the Lord first then everything will fall into place. You'll have time for your marriage, your personal goals, Liam, etc.

But another thing I noticed happening is that life became one big juggling act. I would work on school work and focus on my family but then the housework suffered so then I would focus on the housework and my kids didn't get as much one-on-one time. Just reevaluate often and the juggling gets easier. You'll do awesome and I'm really excited for you!!!

Good for you! I think that is a great thing to do! I am sure it will be hard to juggle everything but you will figure it all out and it will be a great! Good luck! :)

I am sure it will be difficult, and the cleanliness of your home may waver at times, but I know it will be worth it. Continuing your education is something you will never regret doing. Good luck!

I am excited for you. I think it is great that you wish to finish your education. It will take organization and help from others for you to reach your goal but please don't feel that you must do all of it at the level that you have been doing thus far. Some things may have to take a back sit and only you can determine what will have priority. I am competive and expect a lot from myself so going back to school was a lot of hard work and stress for me at the begining, then I decided that I had to also have fun. So I did! Have fun in the process, don't make it all about perfection. The grades are important, (coming from someone who hated getting a B on an assignment!) but what you learn, not just from the text book but from the whole experience, is what really matters.
Don't be afraid to ask for and to accept help.
I did the Myers Briggs course recently. Fun to know what makes us tick and how we relate to others.
Best of luck!
